For we dare not class ourselves or compare ourselves with those who commend themselves. But they, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.

II Corinthians 10:12 NKJV

Each man has his own gift, talent, calling, purpose and timing. We are all different and unique in our own way even when we’re involved in the same profession or similar business. Our uniqueness is lost when we begin to compare ourselves, try to be more like certain people and act like others. Not only is it limiting, but it is also frustrating, because our timing is different. Someone you’re comparing yourself with might be in their season of harvest, but you might be in your season of planting. When you look at their field, compare the effort they’re putting in and yours viz-a vis the results you both are getting, you’re likely to get discouraged and despise what you’re doing. You don’t know what their dream is, they may be carrying a seed of corn, but inside of you might be a cocoa seed. The requirements are different and the timing different.

The bible therefore calls the act of comparison ‘foolishness’, because it drains one of focus and intensity. It makes one to lose momentum, it’s an invitation for unnecessary depression and ingratitude of what God is doing in one’s life and the progress one is making.

Ponder on this as we begin the new week.

To be continued…
