But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if even death separates you and me.”When Naomi realized that Ruth was determined to go with her, she stopped urging her.

Ruth 1:16 NIV

Even in the face of a plethora of people who have forfeited their place in and with God, there still remains a cloud of witnesses who have refused to be seduced out of their place, who have stood their ground in God’s agenda. Let us take a look at a few of them.

Married to a covenant man in a cursed land, Ruth experienced bitter losses, but when it was time to leave the cursed city as decided by her mother in-law, a move that would have taken her out of her place in God, she honored her marriage covenant with her late husband and honored the Hebrew covenant of marriage.

She refused to be persuaded out of her place in God. Her husband must have told her of the Hebrew culture, of their covenant with God and the implications of marrying a Jew and breaking the marriage covenant which binds you to the family even after death especially where no seed (child) exists. Knowing this, she refused to be persuaded out of her place. She stuck to her mother in-law and to the God of Israel. Rooted in her place, she experienced healing, she experienced restoration. She became one of the ancestors of Jesus.
