Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it, saying, “If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”

Luke 19:41-44 NKJV

Nothing catches God unaware. He sees ahead, He knows ahead and He is always ahead. When you belong to God, God will always prepare you ahead. Ahead of changes, trying times, opportunities and every plots of the devil. Oftentimes, God does this by sending His Word and His solution through a messenger. However, the message and the messenger may come in a package that may not appeal to our senses, or that may be contrary to our preferred options.

Because of this, a lot of people have missed out on God’s preservative plan for them, while others have missed God’s provisions and help because it came in packages that violate their sense of acceptance.

The Jew had waited for the promised messiah, the entire scripture is about the coming Messiah. Men had waited in the place of prayer for Him. However, when He came He didn’t fit into their expectations of a Messiah. They had built an idol in their minds of how He will look and operate. Maybe a warrior-king like David, with the power of Samson and the wisdom and administrative acumen of Solomon, with the prophetic cutting edge of Samuel and the leadership quality of Moses, the technocratic prowess of Daniel and the foresight of Joseph. This messiah must surely combine the ability to rain down manna like Moses and call down fire on the Roman Empire like Elijah. They had pictures in their minds, but God’s messenger didn’t fit into their conjured up images.

How many times have we missed opportunities, simply because they didn’t fit into our expectations? How many times have we failed to prepare for coming adversity simply because we didn’t accept the messenger? Imagine if Pharaoh had despised Joseph, a slave and a common criminal. Imagine if Naaman had refused to listen to the slave girl, his condition certainly wouldn’t have changed. Imagen if Elijah had changed his mind when he saw the widow of Zarephath. If the young prophet was not moved by the credentials of the old prophet, his life would have been spared. Judge not by sight.

It is easy for you to miss it when you have already designed how God will move in your life. When you have created the image of the savior God will use for you and have preempted the path God will take.  It’s time to renew our minds, delete the image we’ve built and surrender our own ways to God and make Him our focus. Your husband may not come the way your friend’s husband came. He may not even come in the package you expect but he will fit into your life and purpose and give you a happy life. Your career may not take the path you have drawn up in your mind, but if you will follow His lead you will end up in an even better place than you have dreamt of. It’s time to let go and let God have His way in your life. Stop asking, ‘How will it be?’
