Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, for he has no one to help him up. Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; but how can one be warm alone? Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 NKJV.
God designed man to be like Him and live like Him. God doesn’t work alone. In creation He said “come let US make man in OUR image and after OUR likeness and let THEM have dominion.” So no one was meant to be an island unto himself/herself, we’re designed to work together, shine together and reign together. While no man can operate in isolation, the quality of our partnership or association goes a long way to determine our quality of life and destiny. Whether in marriage, business, ministry, etc. you’re to a large extent the quality of your company.
Our text further stressed the importance of two. However, two of a kind are better than two of divergent kinds. I believe this scripture is referring to two who share a similar value system, similar beliefs, faith, and ideologies. Because oneness is stronger than magnitude, unity bigger than numbers. In Genesis 11 God reveals the virtue and power of oneness “And the Lord said, ‘Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them.'” (Genesis 11:6 NKJV).
It is two who have common belief that are capable of reinforcing each other, for example, two who value prayer can spur each other to pray and when one is down, the other steps in to fill the gap and together they’re irresistible. Two men of faith or women of faith will definitely pull in the same direction. It is two who agree that set heaven on the move. “Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven” (Matthew 18:19 NKJV).
