You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me.

John 5:39 NKJV

One of the most damaging, destructive, and limiting errors, is the error of misconstrued identity. The scriptures does not only contain the power of God, but also reveals our true identity. It is a struggle for many of us to accept what the Bible says about us, because it is contrary to our experience, our feelings, what we’ve come to know about ourselves or our pedigree, etc.

The scripture, to many of us, is like the conversation between the angel and Gideon. “Mighty man of valor,” the angel addressed him based on his true identity. But Gideon challenged him based on his experiences, “if God is with us why are all these happening.” “If by His stripes I am healed, why do I feel pain?” “If I have the love of God in my heart, why do I feel angry?” “If I am blessed, why don’t things go right?” “If none shall lack their mate, why am I still single?” “If I’m the head and not the tail, why do I have carry over?”

The greatest battle a believer will ever fight is the battle of either accepting what the Word declares concerning us or what our experience dictates, for whichever we accept determines our reality.

Jesus says search the scriptures, for that is where our true identity lies. When you don’t know the scriptures, you will err concerning your identity and you will forfeit the power of God to work in your life. Studying the Bible for a believer is not to pacify our religious conscience, it is an exploration of the Treasure Island of our true identity and all that we have in Christ.

The Christian life is supernatural through and through. It is the Word of God that releases the power of God, such that someone who was once timid, crude and unrefined, or poor and sick, sees in the scriptures a new identity and believes it. Then the power of God is released in their life to produce and sustain that new identity.

“Search the scriptures…” It is time to explore our Treasure Island.
